How To: Apply Nail Studs/Decals

Nail studs and decals are a fun way to add a lot of interest to your nails and they're super easy to apply! Whenever I have any on my nails I always have people asking how I apply them and how I make them last on my nails until I want to remove them. The process is very simple and requires only products you already own. You can use nail adhesive (glorified super-glue) to attach studs or gems to your nails, and I have used this method before. However I really don't recommend it as it is very harsh on your nails and a lot trickier. I think the method I use is a lot easier and definitely safer and gentler on your nails.

You will need:
  • Nail Studs
  • Tweezers
  • Top Coat
In terms of choosing the right top coat, most will do fine, however you should avoid "quick dry" formulas as you want the polish to remain tacky while you apply the studs and fast drying formulas tend to be quite thin, inhibiting its' ability to hold on to the stud. I use my favorite CND Super Shiney for this.

  1. Begin by laying out the studs or decals you wish to use on your nails.
  2. Paint two coats of nail polish on all nails (if you desire, the look can also be achieved on bare nails).
  3. Paint a generous layer of top coat on the nail you wish to apply the studs to. If you are applying studs to multiple fingers, work one finger at a time so that the top coat does not dry while you are working on other fingers.
  4. Using tweezers select a stud and position it on the nail.
  5. Using your tweezers push the stud down into the nail polish (this is the most important step!)

As you can see I have pushed the stud into the nail polish, creating a slight ridge of polish around it. This is fine, you won't be able to see it when we are finished.

     6.  Continue to place studs and push them into your nail polish to secure them.
     7.  Once you have placed all the studs in place, seal with a generous layer of the same top coat. If you are only doing one nail, you're done! If doing multiple nails, return to step 3 and repeat the process for each nail.

Viola! So easy to achieve without worrying about glue or adhesive that can damage your nails.

I purchased the studs used here from Amazon (for $2!), but you can find nail studs anywhere from Wal-Mart to beauty supply stores to even craft stores like Michaels.
